Victor was still dealing with his obsession with Suzy. If he personally took out Suzy, Boss or Boston would feed him to the fish. He had to maintain firewalls. He had to consider that George was a danger to him personally. Victor had no illusion about the ability of George to replace him in this operation. Should he contact George to do the job, George would immediately turn Victor in to either Boss or Boston. He knew they would eliminate him before he could touch Suzy. He had his hit men and his drug organization he could call on. He couldn’t use the drug organization. They could deal out the drugs in a way that provided him a fairly good firewall, but violence for them was in the Mexican mode. No finesse. No good.

Sam, the tall hit man, would have to handle this job. Tall Sam had a personal score to settle with Suzy. She had been able to escape him at Gertrude’s house. Unfinished business, so to speak. Tall Sam didn’t like unfinished business. His level of thinking didn’t go much beyond thinking of better ways to kill. Sam would not understand Boss’s position on avoiding Suzy. In fact, Sam had a fantasy about killing Suzy and Victor had not bothered to explain Boss’s position on the matter. Victor concluded that Sam was expendable. Whether he managed to kill Suzy or not, it was time for him to go. Sam had been Victor’s go between far too long and he knew too much. Victor had used Sam for all the assassinations and for everyday contact with the drug dealers.

Weighing this problem required Victor to do the calculus of whether it was more beneficial to kill Sam or not. Victor had the benefit of consistency. Once he considered this kind of question, he always came down on the side of elimination. Dead bodies tell no tales, he thought. Victor, of course, understood that dead bodies do tell tales but not verbally. If properly disposed of, the only tale they would tell was their absence. Disposal of the body in this case might not be possible. Not a perfect setup but workable. Victor would closely monitor the situation and would take out Sam on the way back to his pad in Crestview.

Victor called Sam and they met at their usual rest stop on Interstate 10. Seated at a table in the park area, Victor went over the plans.

“Sam,” said Victor, “this has to be strictly between the two of us. There’s no reason for anyone else to know. Don’t tell any of your buddies about his. They can’t know the mark, the time or place. The police have an eye on this girl and if they get any info, before or after, you’re toast. Understand?”

“Yeah, yeah, Victor. That little bitch won’t get away from me again,” said Sam.

Victor continued, “You’ll have to case this girl for a few days to make sure that when you do this, she’ll be alone. She’s been in training, so don’t get too headstrong.
